| Characteristics of the tree: A medium to large tree which can reach 230ft in height. It has a straight trunk and an open conically shaped crown. A typical medium sized tree produces a trunk about 2ft 6in in diameter. |
| Characteristics of the wood: The wide pale-yellow sapwood is soft, non-resinous and even-textured. The heavier heartwood is deep yellow to reddish brown and is resinous. It can be knotty, with resin ducts that show as the dark fine lines on the surfaces of a board. It is not a durable wood. |
| Workability: Works well with hand and machine tools, although knots can be difficult, particularly when planing. Glues well. |

| Finishing: Takes paint and varnish satisfactorily, but resinous wood should be treated with a sealer. |
| Common uses: Pattern-making, turnery, doors, furniture (sapwood), joinery, building construction(heartwood). |
